It also sits near a cluster of other sites close to downtown Leesburg, so it’s easy to add a second stop without much driving.

If you want a quieter, more personal house

George C. Marshall’s Dodona Manor is the better choice if the plantation scale of Oatlands isn’t what you’re after. It was the retirement home of the Army’s WWII Chief of Staff, and the Federal-style manor reads as a career soldier’s domestic house rather than an estate built to impress. Pick it over Oatlands when you want a smaller, more personal story instead of a grand-house tour.

If you want the labor history without the manor-house frame

The Arcola Slave Quarters Historic Site, near Aldie, preserves one of the few slave dwellings still standing in the county. It’s deliberately plainer than the manor houses, and it stands on its own rather than as a stop inside a bigger estate tour — a direct record of the people whose labor built places like Oatlands and Morven Park, rather than a footnote inside their house tours. If you’re already out that way, Aldie Mill Historic Park fits the same trip: this end of the county is built around working-mill history rather than manor houses.

If Selma or Morven Park are already on your list

Selma Mansion in Leesburg is under active restoration, so treat it as a site to check on rather than a guaranteed full interior tour — even the name signals an ongoing preservation project. If the house itself isn’t accessible when you go, the grounds are still worth the stop.

The Davis Mansion at Morven Park sits within a larger estate property than the single-house museums above, which makes it worth choosing if you want grounds to walk as well as a house to tour, not just the house on its own.
